Unity and Humility in Christ: The Path to True Peace
The following is based off a sermon preached by Lee Snow.
What Makes a Championship Team?
What separates a championship-winning sports team from the rest? Is it talent, strategic game-planning, or relentless practice? While those factors matter, the true key to success is unity. When a team is unified, they overcome shortcomings, work together seamlessly, and achieve far greater success than individual effort alone.
In the same way, the apostle Paul calls the church to unity in Philippians 1:27-2:11. He urges believers to live in a manner worthy of the gospel by being unified and humble—just like Jesus. When we focus on ourselves, anxiety and division increase, but when we embrace selflessness, we experience true peace.
The Weight of Life: Finding Relief Through Community
Many of us feel overwhelmed by the pressures of life. Anxiety, loneliness, and depression can weigh heavily on our hearts. But what if the peace we long for is found not in self-sufficiency but in surrender—to God and to the community He provides?
Peace is not about handling everything alone. Instead, when we focus less on ourselves and more on Jesus and others, we find relief and purpose.
Biblical Truths About Unity and Humility
1. Stand Together in One Spirit (Philippians 1:27-30)
“Only let your manner of life be worthy of the gospel of Christ, so that whether I come and see you or am absent, I may hear of you that you are standing firm in one spirit, with one mind striving side by side for the faith of the gospel…”
Paul emphasizes that the Christian life is not meant to be faced alone. Like athletes striving together for victory, believers must stand firm in faith and support one another in times of suffering. Isolation makes struggles heavier, but unity provides strength, encouragement, and shared burdens.
Application:
- If you’re struggling, don’t withdraw—lean into the church for support.
- If you’re not struggling, be a person others feel comfortable turning to for help.
Hebrews 10:24-25 – “And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another…”
2. Consider Others & Ask for Help (Philippians 2:1-4)
“Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.”
Humility doesn’t mean thinking less of yourself—it means thinking of yourself less. While we often apply this to serving others, it also means allowing others to serve us. Asking for help is not a weakness; it’s wisdom.
Application:
- If you’re struggling, don’t let pride prevent you from seeking help.
- If you’re not struggling, create a welcoming atmosphere where others feel safe to ask for support.
Proverbs 11:14 – “Where there is no guidance, a people falls, but in an abundance of counselors there is safety.”
3. Embody Jesus’ Humility (Philippians 2:5-11)
“Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant…”
Even Jesus, in His deepest distress, did not bear His burdens alone. In the Garden of Gethsemane, He surrendered His will to the Father and was strengthened by an angel (Luke 22:41-43). Similarly, Paul found comfort in his suffering through the support of fellow believers (2 Corinthians 7:6-7).
God places us in community for a reason—so we can support and encourage one another just as Christ and Paul modeled for us.
Application:
- If you’re struggling, remember that no burden is too big for God. He sees you, understands you, and will provide help through His people.
- If you’re not struggling, recognize that God may have placed you in someone’s life to be a source of encouragement and strength.
1 Peter 5:6-7 – “Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God… casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.”
Conclusion: Unity Brings Peace
True peace comes from unity and selflessness in Jesus. When we strive side by side in faith, prioritize the needs of others, and humble ourselves as Christ did, we experience the peace and purpose God intended for us.
Are you struggling? Don’t go through it alone. Lean into the community of believers and seek the peace that comes from unity in Christ.
