Pressing On: Letting Go of the Past and Moving Forward in Faith
We all have things in our past that we wish we could erase—mistakes we’ve made, regrets we carry, or even successes that we hold onto too tightly. But the Apostle Paul gives us a powerful reminder in Philippians 3:13-14:
“Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.”
Paul knew the importance of leaving the past behind and focusing on what God had in store for him. No matter what you’ve done—or what’s been done to you—God calls you forward. Are you ready to press on?
1. Forget What Is Behind (Philippians 3:13a)
Paul tells us to “forget what is behind.” But does that mean erasing our memories? Not at all! Instead, it means choosing not to let the past define us.
- Past failures don’t define you. Paul had once persecuted Christians, but he didn’t let that guilt paralyze him. He focused on God’s mercy instead (1 Timothy 1:15-16).
- Past successes don’t define you. Even Paul’s great accomplishments weren’t his focus—his eyes were on Jesus.
- God’s grace is greater than your highest highs and lowest lows.
Reflection: What failures or successes are you holding onto? Confess them to Jesus and embrace His grace.
2. Strain Toward What Is Ahead (Philippians 3:13b)
Paul uses the image of a runner giving everything he has to reach the finish line. Our spiritual journey requires that same level of focus and commitment.
- Spiritual growth is not passive—it’s an active pursuit.
- Looking back keeps us from moving forward. Jesus said, “No one who puts a hand to the plow and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God” (Luke 9:62).
- Your future in Jesus matters more than your past.
Reflection: What new habits, relationships, or disciplines do you need to start embracing? Set a spiritual goal for the next month and commit to it!
3. Press On Toward the Goal (Philippians 3:14)
What is the goal? Paul tells us—it’s the ultimate prize of eternal life and full fellowship with Jesus (2 Timothy 4:7-8). But this isn’t just about heaven; it’s about living with purpose now.
- Spiritual progress happens when we fix our eyes on Jesus.
- God doesn’t want you stuck in past mistakes—He wants you to grow.
- When we trust God, He directs our steps (Proverbs 3:5-6).
Reflection: What is one step you can take today to push yourself closer to your goal?
Moving Forward with Faith
No matter what’s behind you, God has something ahead of you. The enemy wants you to stay chained to the past, but Jesus calls you forward. Today, make the choice to press on—not because of your strength, but because of His grace.
Are you ready to move forward? Let’s run this race together!
